FIIRO RECEIVES ISO 17025:2005 CERTIFICATION FOR ITS CENTRAL LABORATORY

FIIRO has recorded another milestone in achieving its vision of becoming the foremost Centre of excellence in Science and Technology - based Research and Development for the Industrialization and Socio-economic advancement of the nation. On Thursday, 9th August, 2018, the Institute was presented ISO 17025:2005 certificate for accreditation of its central laboratory. The certificate was received by the Honorable Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu. Nigerian National Accreditation Service (NiNAS) in presenting the certificate to the Hon. Minister said FIIRO is the first public sector that would receive such accreditation in Nigeria.


The Hon. Minister in his speech said attaining ISO 17025:2005 certification is indeed a major achievement in national quest for quality services and excellent delivery of services and a step in the right direction for FIIRO to becoming a leading research Institute in Nigeria and globally. The Hon. Minister also informed the general public that analysis carried out in the accredited FIIRO laboratory would require no further analysis anywhere in the world for acceptance. He further revealed that the ISO certification would enhance export competitiveness of Nigerian products by small, medium and large enterprises who are into export businesses in Nigeria. The Hon. Minister while directing FIIRO to immediately commence activities for accrediting all its laboratories and workshops promised to give full support towards achieving the directive.

Prof. Ajayi Boroffice, the Chairman- Senate Committee on Science and Technology who was a Special Guest of Honor at the event commended the DG/CEO of FIIRO for her visionary leadership and achievements so far which have brought FIIRO to limelight and the attainment of national relevance.

Barrister Segun Awolowo, the Executive Director- Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) who was also a Special Guest at the occasion joined in commending the leadership of FIIRO and reinstated the commitment of NEPC to collaboration with FIIRO in area of value addition to agro-value chains as well as packaging to enhance export potential. 

Dr. Ibrahim Dan’Azumi Gwarzo- the Chairman, Governing Board of the Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi in his remark noted that presentation of ISO: 17025:2015 to FIIRO is attestation of the good hard work of the DG/CEO, Prof. (Mrs.) G.N Elemo and the entire members of staff of the Institute. He said he is aware that ISO certification does not come easy; it requires a lot of resources, commitments and expertise but the benefits which include international recognition for results from ISO certified laboratory justify the means. He further said that the Governing Board would be giving the management of the Institute all the support that is needed to position the Institute as a national and international Institute that could stand at par with similar Institutes with comparable mandates in any part of the world.  

The DG/CEO FIIRO, Prof. (Mrs.) Gloria Elemo in her address at the occasion said the issue of ISO certification was borne out of the Institute’s desire to provide world class quality service to meet the need of industries and research communities both in Nigeria and abroad. She said under the accreditation, ten parameters were accredited covering some critical areas in food and non food especially Charcoal where FIIRO has developed some expertise over the years while another eight parameters would be considered for accreditation under the extension of scope by October 2018. The DG/CEO acknowledged the support of the Hon. Minister, the Permanent Secretary and the Directors in the Ministry of Science and Technology.

ANCHOR UNIVERSITY INITIATES COLLABORATION WITH FIIRO

The Institute has recorded another milestone achievement in its collaboration effort at connective effectively to all its stakeholders. The Vice Chancellor of Anchor University Prof. J. O Afolayan in company of Prof Oladele Fatokun- the Dean Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences and the Ag. Librarian Pastor Zacchaeus B. Emmanuel paid a courtesy visit to the Institute on Tuesday, 31st July, 2018


The visit was facilitated by the Extension & Linkage Department of the Institute. The team was received by the DG/CEO and the Committee of Directors at the Institute's Conference Room. The DG in her welcome address assured the VC that Anchor University is in the right place; that the Institute is highly experienced in the issue of collaboration and has signed MoU with over 30 tertiary institutions and research Institutes both local and international. She informed the guests that the Institute is working with some of these institutions in the following areas: entrepreneurship to produce graduates who would be employers of labour rather than job seekers; joint research projects of mutual interest using the  state of the art facilities in the Institute's laboratories and workshops l; postgraduate and undergraduate internships; sabbatical leave and staff exchange program and so on. The VC Anchor University in his statement on the purpose of visit said that Anchor University desires to partner with FIIRO towards realization of the Outcome Based Education goal of the University with a view to  produce highly skilled and globally competitive graduates who would make a difference in nation development. He informed the meeting that Anchor University recently signed MoU with three  universities in UK, Germany and India and that FIIRO could also benefit from the relationships Anchor University is having with those universities. He said the University wants to hit the ground flying and so, the team has come with a draft MoU to formalize the collaboration. The DG in her response thanked the VC for the achievements of Anchor University within its short period of establishment. She assured the VC that the Institute is ready to work with Anchor University. She mentioned that the Institute has signed MoU with some faith-based universities like Covenant University, Landmark University and Mountaintop University. The DG also presented a draft MoU by the Institute  to the VC with the conclusion that soft copies of the draft MOUs should be exchanged for reconcilation and harmonization into a single draft for consideration of both Parties. The visit ended on a very good note with assurances to work together. Before, taken group photograph and tour of Institute's facilities, the Vice Chancellor signed the historic FIRO Visitor's Book.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

The Prospective Contractors/Service Provider shall be required to submit the following documents:

  1. Evidence of Certificate of Incorporation with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) including Form CAC2 and CAC7;
  2. Evidence of Company Income’s Tax Clearance Certificate for the last three (3) years (2015, 2016 & 2017) valid till 31st December, 2018;
  3. Evidence of current Pension Compliance Certificate valid till 31st December, 2018:
  4. Evidence of current Industrial Training Fund (ITF) Compliance Certificate valid till 31st December, 2018;
  5. Evidence of current Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) Compliance Certificate valid till 31st December, 2018;
  6. Evidence of Registration on the National Database of Federal Contractors, Consultants and Service Providers by submission of Interim Registration Report (IRR) expiring on 1/1/2019 or valid Certificate issued by BPP.
  7. Sworn Affidavit disclosing whether or not any officer of the Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi or the Bureau of Public Procurement is a former or present Director, shareholder or has any pecuniary interest in the bidder and to confirm that all information presented in its bid are true and correct in all particulars;
  8. Company’s Audited Account for the last three (3) years - 2015, 2016 & 2017;
  9. Evidence of financial capability to execute the project by submission of Reference Letter from a reputable commercial bank indicating willingness to provide credit facility for the execution of the project when needed;
  10. Company Profile with Curriculum Vitae of key Staff to be deployed for the project, including copies of their Academic/Professional qualifications (in case of construction: COREN, QSRBN, ARCON, CORBON etc.);
  11. Verifiable documentary evidence of at least three (3) similar jobs executed the last five (5) years including Letters of Awards, Valuation Certificates. Job Completion Certificates and Photographs of the projects;
  12. List of Plants/Equipment with proof of Ownership/Lease (where applicable);
  13. All documents for submission must be transmitted with a Covering/Forwarding letter under the Company/Firm’s Letter Head Paper bearing amongst others, the Registration Number (RC) as issued by the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). The Letterhead Paper must bear the Names and Nationalities of the Directors of the Company at the bottom of the page, duly signed by the authorized officer of the firm.

FIIRO TRAINS STAFF OF RAW MATERIALS RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL ON PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

The Institute commenced one week training on PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT for 5 members of staff of the Raw Materials Research and Development Council on Monday 23rd July 2018.


The training was requested by the DG/CEO RMRDC to build capacity for Staff of the newly established Product Development Division at RMRDC. The one week program is fully loaded with modules designed based on Product Development experience at FIIRO from the perspectives of food products, biotechnology products, chemical products, polymer products, pulp and paper products, processing equipment etc. The training will be concluded tomorrow 27th July 2018 with an Industrial Visit to the Technology Incubation Centre, Agege- Lagos.

FIIRO’S RESEARCH OFFICER SELECTED AS A 2018 MANDELA WASHINGTON FELLOW FOR THE YOUNG AFRICAN LEADERS INITATIVE (YALI)

Oluwaseun Ruth Ishola is a research officer in the Nutraceutical, Aromatic and Pesticidal Plant (NAPP’s) division of the Chemical, Fiber and Environmental Technology (CFET) department at the Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi (FIIRO).


She has over seven years experience conducting research and development projects in Nigeria. Oluwaseun has led and worked in various multidisciplinary research teams, focusing on adding value to underutilized and locally available agricultural raw materials for food and non-food utilization. Through her research outputs, she has created value chain systems with the potential to promote economic inclusion of marginalized groups such as unemployed youths and women. She has a Masters’ in Human Nutrition from the University of Ibadan and a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Bowen University, Iwo.

In 2016, Oluwaseun was selected as the sole representative for Nigeria for the Young Professional Internship Program (YPIP) of the West African Health Organization (WAHO), during which she acquired regional experience managing issues related to nutrition and child survival. In 2017 she was nominated as one of the top thirty innovators for North and West Africa in the Gender in Agribusiness Investments in Africa (GAIA) organized by the African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD).

In recognition of her work and contributions toward driving socio-economic impact in her country and region, Oluwaseun was recently selected as one of seven hundred young African leaders for the Mandela Washington Fellowship (MWF) 2018.

The MWF for Young African Leaders is the flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) by the U.S. Department of State which empowers young people through academic coursework, leadership training, and networking.

The fellowship received 11,000 applications from Nigeria in 2018 out of which 60 were selected.

Under the Public Management track of the fellowship, Oluwaseun attended a six week academic training at the Maxwell School of Public Management and International Relations, Syracuse University, New York where she acquired extensive knowledge, skills and competencies in public management.

At the end of the academic training, she proceeded for a three day summit at Washington DC where she was awarded a certificate of completion by the Department of State. These exposures qualify Oluwaseun as an alumnus of Maxwell School, Syracuse University and a Mandela Washington Fellow. Going forward, her vision is to have her research findings influence public sector policies with a sustainable impact on the health and development sectors in Nigeria and Africa at large.

NIGER STATE SHEA SECTOR DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME PARTNERS FIIRO ON VALUE ADDITION

FIIRO in pursuance of its program on strategic collaboration with relevant organizations and agencies for effective delivery of its mandate received the Executives of the Niger State Shea Sector Development Program on courtesy visit on Thursday 26th July 2018.

The Committee of Directors joined the DG/CEO Prof Mrs G.N Elemo to receive the guests. The DG in her welcome speech thanked the leadership of NSSSDP (namely, Prince Ajibola Oluyede - Chairman; Anabel- Vice Chairman and Yosola- Secretary) for the request to partner with FIIRO. The DG said Shea is another gold that is capable of turning around the economy of Nigeria through the development of the Cosmetic and the Pharmaceutical industries. She also mentioned that Nigerians can earn a lot of foreign exchange through export of value added Shea products. Having talked extensively on the activities of the Institute in the area of Shea processing especially value addition along the Shea value chain, the DG assured the organization of the Institute's readiness to partner with NSSSDP to achieve its set goals. The Chairman of NSSSDP in his response thanked the DG for the opportunity for the courtesy visit. He presented a brief on the activities of NSSSDP which he said it's a private driven organization but an initiative of the Niger State government. He said NSSSDP would like to partner with FIIRO on value addition along the whole value chain of Shea including the pulp/fruit, nut etc and on development of appropriate processing equipment suitable for the micro, small and medium enterprises amongst others. As suggested by the Director - E&L, the meeting agreed on the need to sign a Memorandum of Understanding to provide strategic guide for the collaboration. The meeting ended on a very good note with assurances from both parties to work together.
